Cyprus Unveiled – Explore the Mediterranean Paradise | History, Culture & Sun-Kissed Beaches

The Republic of Cyprus is an island nation located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean and lies south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel, and southeast of Greece. Cyprus has a long and fascinating history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Neolithic period. The island has been under the rule of various empires, including the Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. It gained independence from British colonial rule in 1960.

The official languages of Cyprus are Greek and Turkish, reflecting the two largest ethnic groups on the island. The population is predominantly Greek Cypriot, with a Turkish Cypriot minority residing mainly in the north. In 1974, the island was divided into the Greek Cypriot-controlled southern part and the Turkish Cypriot-controlled northern part, following a coup attempt by Greek Cypriot nationalists and a subsequent Turkish military intervention. The northern part declared itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in 1983, but it is only recognized by Turkey. The Republic of Cyprus is internationally recognized as the legitimate government of the entire island.

Nicosia is the capital and largest city of Cyprus, and it is the only capital in the world that is divided by a demilitarized zone, known as the “Green Line.” The economy of Cyprus is driven by tourism, shipping, and financial services. The island is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and abundant sunshine, making it a popular tourist destination.

Cyprus is a member of several international organizations, including the United Nations, the European Union (since 2004), and the Commonwealth. The country is committed to promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region, as well as fostering close relations with its neighbors and partners around the world.
